Taste Detectives: Boldly Daring New Foods

Breakfast Results: Eggs, bacon, orange juice, and muffins

We compared different store brands of eggs, bacon, orange juice, and muffins to see which was best. We are very picky! It's hard work being a Taste Detective, after all. Sadly, we were lulled into saturated-fats induced stupors after the experiment and did not record all the details of this first Endeavor, but we do have the Exciting Results to share below:

Bacon: More than just nitrites and fat

Scientific Ranking Brand/description Comments
1st Uncured Earth Fair Bacon Not cheap at $1/oz, but the unaminous favorite
2nd Applewood We forgot to make notes :(
3rd Maple Overly sweet, this didn't stand up well
Last Hickory This tasted rubbery and artificial

Orange Juice: Pulp by any other name...

Scientific Ranking Brand/description Comments
1st Simply Orange Yes, the bottle is funny-looking, but the contents are tasty
2nd Minute Maid This was a strong contender for second place! Not bad!
Last Tropicana If only we'd had 98 more samples, Tropicana would have
come it at rank 100...

Eggs: I never liked eggs..

Scientific Ranking Brand/description Comments
1st Brown egg from complete free range
black or white hens
Unaminous winner; these were procured from a local farmer.
Does the hen's black and/or white coloration pattern impart
mystical egg-tasting genetics? Clearly a government grant is
needed to study this issue in depth. Please contact us if you
are a government grant writer, or if you sell black and/or white hens.
2nd Blue egg laid by hens that are neither black and/or white
This egg had a pleasing, creamy texture.
3rd and 4th Kroger white and brown shell eggs For some reason we wrote down that we suspected these hens had
been visited by a cock. Regardless, the eggs were boring.
Last Egglands Best These eggs were smaller than all the others--3 were needed
for an adequate sampling, vs. 2 of the other varieties. They
also tasted the worst. Maybe that's because they are supposed
to be good for you.

Breakfast Breads

We gathered a variety of the following:

And consumned them all in a carbohydrate frenzy. None of the bread samples survived escaped our Exacting Scrutiny. Unfortunately, the only conclusions we made about them were:

  1. Bread is good
  2. We like butter and jam on biscuits

Quiche: Cassidy says, "I know a recipe for a good quiche..."

Scientific Ranking Brand/description Comments: The quiches were homemade, not purchased
1st Leek, Canadian Bacon, and Gruyere Quiche If you don't like this, there's something wrong with you.
Runner-Up Spinach Quiche Spinach is the most popular choice and 2nd favorite.
There is no last place for this category because this was
also excellent.
